Refugee Education UK becomes our official partner organisation for the financial year 2023-4 and will receive 100% of Learning By Heart’s charitable donation.

18 May 2023- We are delighted to be starting our third year of operation by announcing our new partnership with Refugee Education UK, a national charity which equips young refugees and asylum seekers to build positive futures by thriving in education. REUK supports young refugees from across the world in diverse ways: by training and matching them with volunteer mentors, by giving advice and guidance for accessing and progressing in education, delivering 1:1 intensive wellbeing support to young refugees with acute mental health and wellbeing needs, and running leadership and advocacy courses which embolden and empower future refugee leaders. They also conduct research and training on everything refugee education.

Learning By Heart was founded in May 2020 as a social action project designed to address educational inequality in a two-pronged manner: by providing accessible, pay-as-you-feel tutoring support for children and adults in the UK and donating the proceeds to educational charities working to advance young people’s education across the world.

In January 2023, we received official status as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in the UK- one of our proudest achievements as a project largely run by university students and young professionals. With this under our belts, we updated our grant-making processes to maximise our impact. From this year, Learning By Heart will donate 100% of our available proceeds to one charity each year (with our financial year running May to May). Educational charities of all shapes and sizes are encouraged to apply for funding, these are then shortlisted and a recipient selected based on a vote by Learning By Heart’s volunteers and trustees. We are proud to enable our volunteers to decide where their fundraising efforts are directed, and very excited to be supporting REUK this year, knowing that their core value and mission resonates with our own.

Annie Lawn, Senior Supporter Engagement and Fundraising Officer at Refugee Education UK commented:

In a turbulent time for those seeking safety in the UK, REUK is delighted to have the support of Learning By Heart who, like us, believe that all young people in the UK should be enabled to access and thrive in education, regardless of their immigration status. We are incredibly grateful to have been chosen as Learning by Hearts’ charity partner this year, and look forward to pursuing quality education for all with them by our side.’

In the context of developing global conflicts and increasing refugee numbers, we feel that there has never been a more important moment to show our support for refugees. We are humbled to be working with REUK and look forward to a meaningful and productive partnership.

Education Cannot Wait becomes our second partner organisation and going forward will receive 50% of the proceeds from Learning by Heart.

5th September 2021 - We are incredibly proud to be celebrating the International Day of Charity by announcing our new partnership with Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the United Nations global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises. ECW supports and protects holistic learning outcomes for refugee, internally displaced and other crisis-affected girls and boys, so no one is left behind.

Since its inception in May 2020, Learning by Heart has committed to use the proceeds from our pay-as-you-feel tutoring services to support larger organisations, who work globally in the field of education. At our core, Learning by Heart is an initiative that fights for educational rights for all young people across the world.

When we reached our initial fundraising goal of £1000 back in February this year, we decided to choose an additional organisation to support with our proceeds. We chose ECW because their mission and values resonate with our own and we were inspired by the impact it has had in over 30 crisis-affected countries across the globe. We and our community of students take great pride in the fact that for every lesson delivered, another child’s education benefits.

“With an increasing number of children and youth being affected by armed conflicts, the climate crisis, forced displacement and COVID-19, innovative partnerships are more than ever crucial to fulfill the right of every single girl and boy to access quality education. Learning by Heart’s model of providing learning opportunities at a local level to benefit education at a global level is inspiring. Education Cannot Wait is grateful for their support and, together, we will work to ensure that every child – regardless of the challenges they may face – has equitable access to a safe, holistic education,” Yasmine Sherif, Director of Education Cannot Wait.

We are thrilled to be able to work with ECW and are excited about what the future holds for this partnership. As Learning by Heart continues to grow as a community of tutors and learners in the UK, it is incredibly meaningful to develop partnerships with global funds like ECW so we can expand our reach both at home and further afield.

We’re incredibly grateful for all the support given to us by ECW throughout this period, and we look forward to a meaningful and productive partnership as we move forward into the future of Learning by Heart.
